Did you know you don’t have to keep the signature blue clouds as your background? Twitter currently has themes that you can use, but I advise to take it a step further.  If you are going to use this micro-blogging tool, why not make your Twitter page match your brand? Use the page background to show off your latest book release? It’s really easy to customize your design.  Here are some basic instructions:

  • Click on Settings at the top of the Twitter page.
  • Then click on Design (it’s the last tab).
  • Choose “Use my custom style below”.
  • If you have your own image, select “Use background image.” You can also choose tile if you want your uploaded image to be scattered across the background as a pattern.
  • Browse on your computer for the image you want to use and click SAVE. You should seen the background appear.
  • Take the time to choose colors that match your Web site too!

Customizing your page will make it stand out from the rest of the Twitter crowd.

BIG NO-NO’S

  • Do not use an image and tile it.
That means use the same image over and over again, unless it has a pleasing pattern to it.  You don’t want the background to distract you followers.
  • Be careful with your color choices.
Remember it’s a computer screen and you can go bold with colors, but there is a way to mute it some for the computer where it doesn’t it scream at you.
  • Don’t overload with info.
If you include your book cover, add details like book release date. Add your website address, but don’t over do it with the info in the graphic. Since it’s a graphic, it’s not clickable, so just give them enough to be able to type in and pull up the website.
  • Be professional. Enough said.
